What’s Your Skin Type?

June 27, 2014

Knowing Your Skin

Knowing your skin type is absolutely necessary in order to make the right decisions about proper skin care or treatment, which is suitable for your particular skin needs.

The initial quality, or type, of your skin is genetically determined – meaning that you are born with it. However, the health and beauty of your skin later in life largely depends on what you eat and how you take care of yourself now. There’s a popular Russian saying that goes, “after the age of 30, you look the way you deserve.” To always look great, the first step is to determine your skin type so that you can match it with the best recommended methods to improve your look and slow the aging process.

One of the most common methods to identify skin type is the Fitzpatrick scale. This scale assigns the various shades of skin “types”, ranging from Type 1 to Type 6. The paler you are, the lower your type. Check out the chart below to determine your skin tone:

Treatments For All Skin Types:

Facials:

The most popular spa treatment, a facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when performed by an experienced aesthetian. A facial cleanses, exfoliates, tones, nourishes and balances the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated and healthy-looking complexion. A facial works best when it’s part of an on-going program of skin care.

How often should I get a facial?

Ideally, a monthly facial is recommended to maintain healthy-looking skin, and because that’s how long it takes the skin to regenerate. If you don’t have time for monthly facials, try to get a facial at least 4 times a year, as the seasons change. You may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne, or any other specific skin concerns.

 Peels:

A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the skin appearance of all skin types. A solution is applied to the skin in a controlled manner to repair the damaged outer layers and improve overall texture, tone and elasticity. Chemical peels can improve different skin conditions at different strengths, and therefore, with varying healing times depending on the strength.

How often should I get a peel?

Superficial (weaker) peels can be done more frequently, about every 1-2 months, to maintain glowing results. Deeper (stronger) peels should be done every 3-4 months for more transformative results.

 Laser Skin Rejuvenation:

For a more dramatic, permanent or longest-lasting result, Laser skin rejuvenation (such as a Photofacial) is recommended. Highly effective in reducing age spots, broken capillaries, discoloration, lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and rosacea, whilst boosting collagen for improved skin laxity and overall texure.

How often should I have laser treatments?

Since each laser treatment is customized based on patient’s desired results, the amount of treatment needed varies. On average 2-4 treatments, based a month apart, is usually very effective for longest-lasting results.
